A stretched Model Y with more space, luxury touches, and a new six-seat layout – here’s what Aussie Tesla owners need to know.
Tesla has introduced the Model Y L, a stretched, long-wheelbase version of the Model Y that adds a genuine six-seat layout. The new variant is confirmed for China first, but the changes are interesting to Aussie Tesla owners and accessory buyers alike.
A longer, more comfortable layout
The Model Y L lengthens the standard Model Y by roughly 18cm and stretches the wheelbase to give noticeably more legroom in the rear rows. The SUV’s slightly increased height and refined styling — including a fresh rear spoiler, updated wheels and a unique Model Y L badge — make the changes more than just practical.
Genuine six seats, better practicality
Tesla uses a 2+2+2 seating configuration rather than a cramped seven-seat design. That means every passenger gets their own seat, and both the second and third rows fold flat to create a large, usable cargo area — perfect for family trips, surfboards, bikes or bulky gear.
Performance and range
Under the bonnet the Model Y L keeps Tesla’s dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup and offers strong straight-line performance and long range. Battery and range figures position the L variant among the most capable Model Y options available in testing cycles reported so far.
What it means for Australian Tesla owners
There’s no official Australia launch date yet — Tesla is rolling the Model Y L out in China first — but the Model Y is already popular in Australia. If the L variant reaches our market, it will likely attract larger families and buyers who need extra space without stepping up to a Model X.
Accessory opportunities and compatibility
Whether or not the Model Y L arrives in Australia immediately, the longer wheelbase and six-seat layout create clear product opportunities for accessory suppliers. At Tessories we’re preparing items that Aussie owners will want:
- Custom seat covers for 2+2+2 layouts.
- Extended all-weather floor mats and boot liners that cover the longer load area.
- Fold-flat cargo organisers and heavy-duty boot liners for outdoor gear.
Tip: many accessories for the existing Model Y may fit the L variant with minor adjustments — but we’ll confirm compatibility as soon as Tesla provides official dimensions for Australian markets.
